Fishing 101

So, you want to go fishing? You want to take the kids so that they get to enjoy the great outdoors and enjoy this great activity? Sounds great! But how do you get started with fishing? It’s easy and we will give you a few pointers to get you headed in the right direction!

Getting Started

The first step is to make the decision to start fishing. Part of the decision is will you be going with others or just by yourself. Another important decision is to decide where you want to go fishing. If you are familiar with the surrounding area you should be able to find a fishing spot to get started. If not, you may be able to inquire with a local fishing enthusiast. They should be able to give you a good place to start fishing.

Once you have decided to begin fishing and have a spot to do your fishing, you are ready to go. But before you are ready to head out and grab some fish out of the water, you need to do a few things. First you need to inquire about needing a fishing license. Start with your local municipality and they could direct you to the proper place. Another good source of information would be the state fish and game authority. From these sources you should be able to get any fishing licenses you may need.


Now that you have your license and you have a location to fish, you need a few other things. In order to start fishing you need a rod and reel. For a beginner you should purchase a combo rod and reel just to get you started. Next you will need bait and lures. Just a few lures and some worms will get you started. When you purchase your equipment, it may be advisable to get a small tackle box to keep your fishing equipment.

Now that you have the fishing gear to get started, just a few other items. When you are fishing it is important to be respectful of other people fishing nearby. Keep talking to a minimum and try not to make too much noise which could spook the fish. Also be respectful of the environment. When you are finished fishing make sure that you take out everything that you brought with you.
